Brian G over at nyvelocity.com got his hands on a MADSEN, took his 4th grader Jimmy out with it and filed a report, including video!
This bike would be a great addition to the garage of someone who lives within riding distance of a local downtown area. In the morning he or she could take the children, it can hold as many as four, to school and then stock up on groceries and run errands. If used enough, the money saved on gas would eventually even out the price tag, plus the environmental impact of one less car being driven less than five miles at a clip is worth noting.
Elliot over at AustinOnTwoWheels.org put his neighbor's MADSEN through some paces and offers some insights:
I decided to jump in all the way and loaded up both my kids and Courtney’s daughter, Freya, for a longer ride around the neighborhood. The Madsen Bucket did not disappoint. It remained stable from slow to quicker speeds, and I felt little instability when the children shifted around. The lower center of gravity of passengers plus its more secure seating make this a better design for hauling people and kids especially than the Xtracycle.
Last year, we signed up several great dealers and hope to continue in 2009. Our dealer network is still quite thin. In 2008 we shipped a lot of bicycles out to customers who did not have a local MADSEN Cycles dealer. MADSEN Cycles would arrange for the assembly and tune-up through a non-MADSEN Cycles dealer. For the most part this system worked fine, with a few exceptions. Not all of the shops we sent bikes to were really happy to assemble a “cargo bike”. Because they were not a MADSEN Cycles dealer, they were not familiar with the bike and the bike was not always properly assembled. A few of the shops (non-cargo bike shops) were quite critical and vocal to the customers about their new cargo bike purchases. This month we launched a new option for customers that don’t have a MADSEN Cycles dealer in their neighborhood. We have been shipping fully assembled and tuned bicycles right to our customer’s front door! (The big shipping box makes a
cool fort for the kids.) This white gloved service is now available anywhere in the Continental U.S. Learn more about it on madsencycles.com .
